What is the difference  between an AQF Level 3, 5 & 8 Arborist?

The difference  between an AQF Level 3, 5 & 8 Arborist?

In Australia, arborists are commonly classified by their Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level, which reflects their training, knowledge, and scope of work.

AQF Level 3 Arborist (Certificate III in Arboriculture)
A Level 3 arborist is a qualified tradesperson who performs practical tree work such as climbing, pruning, tree removal, rigging, and general tree maintenance. They are the hands-on arborists you typically see carrying out tree work on-site.

AQF Level 5 Arborist (Diploma of Arboriculture)
A Level 5 arborist is generally a consulting arborist. In addition to practical knowledge, they are trained to assess tree health, risk, and structural integrity, and to prepare formal arborist reports for councils, development applications, insurance claims, and legal matters. Many councils specifically require AQF Level 5 reports for protected trees or construction projects.

AQF Level 8 Arborist (Graduate Diploma / Graduate Certificate level)
A Level 8 arborist has advanced academic and specialist expertise in arboriculture, urban forestry, tree management, and research. These arborists are often involved in high-level consultancy, policy development, expert witness work, education, or complex urban forest planning. They are far less common in the industry and typically work beyond standard day-to-day tree operations.
